  1. Best Laid Plans

He needed to accomplish the task incognito, so Brian carefully chose a cheap, nondescript vehicle. He then waited for a snowy winter’s day.

But soon after departing, the weather deteriorated into a whiteout. The road, field and sky were indistinguishable. He drove on. There was an important job to do.

Despite being a 4×4, the car slid into a ditch before he reached the cliff, where he planned to send it over the edge. Now he needed a tow.

So much for fresh snow covering his tracks. So much for avoiding attention.

There was still a body in the back.

    A Legend

A blizzard shrouded the mountain road as Vladimir slammed the Niva’s engine. Lunging forward; the suspension shuddered, but the chassis held, a box of stubborn steel and Soviet spite, wearing its scars like medals.

Clawing its way up the pass, tyre tracks, frozen fingerprints in deep snow, the transmission screeched in mechanical agony as low gears ground against ice.

Behind, headlights searched through the squall, but his pursuers’ modern SUVs floundered, falling ever distant over the narrowing pass.

Their last shot pierced the thin tailgate, whistling past Vladimir’s ear. He didn’t flinch, just grinned as he disappeared beyond the peak.
