    The Window

“It’s cold in here,” I said, questioning the chill marking my face.

“We have left that open for–I think it was–5 years. Yes, that’s how long she’s been gone for.” Alyson said, her face slumping into a frown. She walked toward the window and paused,

“This was her favorite place to stand–come here–”

I walked towards it, the spring air full of pine and flowers. This is a game we play:
I talk with her and she pretends that I am not her daughter.

  2. Between Worlds

We all grew up hearing crazy tales about the lake, warnings to keep kids from swimming out too far. Mabel and Rory’s grandfather used to say the lake is a window between worlds, a portal to a land untouched by violence or greed. A magical place that only the pure of heart get to see. Others say it’s a doorway to a sinister place, where the screams never stop and the sun blares down like an angry hot coal from the sky. I hope Mabel and Rory’s Grandfather was right. You see, Mabel and Rory weren’t the first to disappear.

  3. The Editing Process

Failing eyesight and imagination sit beside me, while I read, in the first light of a warm summer’s day. Jazz competes with birdsong. The muted glow through a dusty pane splashes across the bed: a rumpled case of insomnia.

    Stranger morning.

Each word the eyes stroke into existence squirms. Raises its head. Grows wings. Takes off from its ink-cage. Zaps around the room. I cannot but chase them; after all, they are mine … I think.

Some are easy catches and I press those into the paper but they’ve gone limp, probably dead, from this gentle violence.

    I continue the massacre.
