Book Review

Duets

Where to begin? Creativity abounds in this collection. The name Duets aptly implies what one will unearth within the pages. Melodies explode off the page with each carefully curated artistic interpretation, alongside words that somehow breathe more life into the artwork. Whether poetry or prose, this book is filled with stories that sing. Marques has mastered bookbinding with a creative thread. Page after page, the reader uncovers new delights and dimensions, bringing a real musical quality to this stunning work. In “Praise Rain” (p57) by Kathy Fish, “The fallen and the falling were rain.” one begins to hear soundscapes in the background of the mind. Some works, as in “Help” by Trini Decombe (p95), stop the reader’s breath altogether.

Marques’ artwork is abundant, and it is not easy to select a standout. However, the paper mosaic collage alongside “Barlow Adams’ Tweet” (p14-15) did grant a sort of sangfroid to the poignant tweet, garnering more emphasis. The book closes with a Behind The Scenes look inside the contributors’ artistry, granting a peek inside the creative process from different points of view. Overall, this collaboration is well worth a spot on one’s bookshelf or a coffee table solo.

Author Statement

Duets was born because I was spilling over with gratitude for the writing/artistry community and wanted to honor so many of the wonderful writers who have supported, mentored, edited, published, workshopped, and celebrated with me throughout my writing journey!

There’s something magical about reading someone’s words and trying to create a visual representation of it. I learned so much about their different writing styles, and the art ended up being an invitation to conversations in which I learned the backstory of many of the pieces, and because of that, they are now that much more special to me.

3 Questions

Amy Marques

INK: What most inspires you to write?

AM: Everything! Anything!

INK: What does your writing routine look like?

AM: There’s no routine! I’m not an artist by training. I’m becoming one by unraveling expectations. Much like I pull scraps together to make art, I pull scraps of time together for the making of that art. I try to use my quietest and most productive times for the things I want to do. I don’t need my freshest thoughts spent on laundry!

INK: Name a favorite poem or artwork (or both) you feel everyone should read/view and why.

AM: I have a hard time saying what everyone should engage with because we are different and go through phases in life when words or art take on varied meanings. We should all allow ourselves to enjoy what speaks to us – even if it’s not trendy or “high art.” Both clouds and bird poop can look like art, if we pay attention.
