On July 4 When the Sky is on Fire

There’s nothing to celebrate. The dog agrees. Hates and has always hated the noise that sounds to her ears, and to the ears of combat vets, like bombs. Nothing to love about that. No scream is worth remembering. Screams are fear and I fear for us. This isn’t fiction. It’s today’s headline.

I’m holding on to birdsong because that’s what we’ve got and it’s beautiful, but the truth is that songs won’t feed us. Soup might feed us, and the good news is that I’ve got a recipe for stone soup. There are so many stones. Enough to drown us.

  2. Sparks

    The sparks flew upward
    then went down
as fireworks in my heart formed one bright crown
    in my night sky
    a momentous diadem
    until the moment
    wisps, flashes, silent sparks
    all gone.
    Awe, that breathless awe,
    paused, then
    descended in a gray smoke
wafting in a dark black sky.

“Our lives are but a vapor”
    Grandpa said,
” a mist that first appears but
    then is gone.”

I hear his old voice still.
The booms and flashes of the truth
    prevail.
Every light that dares a moment
    Iasts
    in every eye
    in every ear
    in every soul
    that saw or heard.

  3. Don’t Look Up
We’re making good progress. I think I know the answer, but I need to ask. Did you serve?
    No, why?
Any time we get to a picture that looks like this pattern you shut down. Show signs of recalled trauma.
You’re thinking rockets red glare and all that?
    Well, maybe.
    I played baseball.
    Yes, I’m aware.
    I was a pitcher.
    Yes. And…
Our stadium had one of those exploding scoreboards. Every time I gave up a homerun the fireworks would go off.
Aah. Ouch. Well that’s all the time we have this week. Do you have plans for the Fourth?

  4. Fireworks

Hotdogs. Mum’s potato salad — she always brought it to family doo’s. It was thick with mayo, heavy on onion, chopped eggs, cubed potatoes, and crushed saltine crackers.

“Saltines is a southern thing,” she explained to my aunt, who in turn huffed that Mum wasn’t southern; she was more northern than Alaska. While they glared at each other, my cousin and I ran off to the orchard and climbed a cherry tree (fruitless by early July).

The rain started around dusk, wind kicked up, nevertheless, we stood with umbrellas, watching fireworks blow apart like tiny planets escaping the solar system.

      The Power of Love
The Court Jester was imprisoned. He was to die for defying the King’s opinion that the stars in the sky are countable! As his last wish, he asked the King for a display of some fireworks, to have the number of sparks counted.
His Majesty passed an order to that effect asking all his courtiers to try to count the number of sparks!
As the fireworks went up, the Royal Couple looked at the spectacle from the balcony of the palace. Amidst the ensuing mayhem, the majestic sight was said to rekindle their old love.
      The Jester was freed unconditionally!
