Only when you cast a handful of
stars into the sky, will I marry you.’
Jake’s smile dissolved.
‘That’s a ‘’no’’ then?’ he said.
‘See how easily you give up?’ I stood
up from the crumpled picnic rug, knocking over the Bollinger bottle he’d opened.
‘You have no imagination!’
I stomped to the car, ignoring Jake’s pained expression.
Two years later, a beautiful and kind girl I’d been to school with, posed on social media with Jake, a wonderful man who, when he’d proposed, ‘blew on a dandelion puffball and seed stars floated into the night, sparkling in the moonlight.’
Oops forgot the title …
‘A Handful of Stars’
Divinity
“Baba, come.” My 7-year-old daughter came sprinting into my Study, forcing me to get up from my chair.
“You tell me that heaven’s out here for the good-hearted, no?” She exclaimed. “I’ve found heaven.”
More curious than stunned, I let myself be led outside.
The view outside my cottage was breath-taking!
The rainbow across the blue sky behind the mountains looked gorgeous. But what made the sight divine was a singular, majestic flower head with its starry seeds, standing tall against the backdrop of the vastness of Mother Nature, proclaiming the glory of The Almighty!
“God!” I cried. “It’s heavenly!”
The end
A wish knows where to go, even if we don’t my twin sister would tell me when I couldn’t decide upon which dream in my life I wanted to come true. Even then, I would stare at the fading light of her brown eyes, knowing her weakened body had a time line much shorter than mine. I never said aloud how I wanted us to always wrestle like this, arms and legs both, to see which one of us would get the bottom bunk bed in a too-small bedroom. I never told her I’d gladly let her win every time.
Late Bloomers
Angie entered the sprawling restaurant/bar and spotted the table of seniors in the back. She grabbed a barstool and gingerly climbed aboard next to the other grandmas from her development. If was her first karaoke night and she hoped she wouldn’t regret accepting the invitation. After the intros she made small talk. “Why ‘The Dandelions’?” she asked Kay, the leader of the florally named social group. “Simple,” answered her neighbor, sucking down the last of her Colada while eyeing the busboy. “When we go from blonde to wispy white up top, that’s when we are ready to spread our seed.”
