Bird’s-eye view
A weathered wooden post, once one of many, jutted from the riverside grass. Perched atop its jagged crown, a flycatcher, chest puffed out, preyed. Almost lifeless, the bird’s dark, obsidian-like eyes religiously scanned the shimmering summer air.
Then, in range, a dragonfly darted, triggering the bird’s launch. A grey-speckled blur against the sky, its yellow-lined beak clenched the insect’s wings in mid-air. Returning to its perch, its tail triumphantly twitched as it gorged on its meal. All was quiet, but for the sound of the river gurgling over rocks as the flycatcher returned to its vigil; the day had begun.
