  1. Steven Lemprière

    War of the Worlds

Rubber hummed against the cycle path, its song high-pitched and melodic as Ellie approached the junction at pace. She timed her cadence with the changing lights, feeling her heartbeat sync with the city’s pulse. Cars idled at red, a point where two worlds collided, their engines exuding predatory growls as drivers impatiently stared down approaching cyclists.
A gust of wind lifted Ellie’s hair as she bisected a river of combustion. Another junction conquered.
Rejoining the cycle path, morning light spilled over the asphalt, casting fractured shadows, and in that fleeting moment she remembered why she rode — freedom, pure and unfiltered.
