Rainbow Bridge
Viking funeral, my eye. As if the water isn’t frozen over up here this time of year. And all that pyromania? 100 percent Hollywood. Too flashy. Not Pop’s way.
Pop was a woodsman. We were not about to send him out on his final journey on a little raft, like a beaver. Only one way for him to go. Like a proper Norseman. Strapped in the saddle. Accelerator tied down. Full tank. Hell bent for Valhalla at 180 horsepower. Come to think of it there might be some fireworks after all depending on his path.
Bon Voyage and Skol, Poppa.
THE CHANGES THAT COME WITH TIME
Beneath massive overhead power lines and treetops threatening to avalanche from the accumulated snow, seventy-year-old Betty Smith glimpsed the shadowy pair of thirtysomethings that were leisurely coming towards her and wanted to retreat into the nearby woods.
Nonetheless, Betty remained in place.
She desperately wanted to see if “her” kids, Steven and Natasha Harloway, remembered the woman who had rescued them twenty-five years ago from their abusive foster parents.
The smiles and nearly inaudible laughter between the two reassured Betty that they didn’t recognize the woman.
As they passed without a look, Betty cursed the changes that come with time.
