On the first Wednesday of each month, we publish 2 selected 100 Word Stories (1 from submissions and 1 entry from the 100 Word Wednesday weekly prompts on the blog.)

Read other entries and comment on others. Lastly, this is a positive forum for feedback!

  1. I Know it was Wrong

Mabel refused to be photographed after Rory disappeared. She said she had no soul, that her heart had turned dark the day her twin brother vanished. Townsfolk said she was a witch, a demon who walked the banks of the lake at night, spouting off incantations and looking for children to intoxicate with promises of sweets and moon magic. One night, I snuck quietly down to the lake, found her standing knee deep in the water, crying and singing. I know it was wrong, but I took her photograph. Thing was, when I developed it, Mabel wasn’t in the picture.

  2. The Photo of the Girl With the Giant Leaf

She stands beside a vertical leaf longer than she is tall. Puffy white clouds jewel a turquoise sky, but this appears to be the tropics so who knows what lurks. She wears a gold necklace. Perhaps an heirloom? A gift? Fake? Her smile is bright as the sky but might also be fake because a chill in her eyes seems to say “Just take the damn picture.” As if she knows what’s over the horizon. As if she wishes she could cocoon herself in the giant leaf and emerge somewhere, anywhere, else. Even a place dressed in ice and snow.

  3. Going back to Love

“It’s is not about speed.” She said.
“Who has the time, babe?” He laughed and switched his phone to selfie mode. Then, he stretched his arm as far as it would go and posed. She mimicked him immediately.
He showed her the phone’s screen and said: “I love this!”
She smiled and swiped the screen a few times. “So many similar shots. Are we trying to convince ourselves by repetition?”
    He left the room.
She wondered if he was upset until he returned with a film camera, his finger ready. “Slow enough for you?” He quipped as the shutter clicked.
