  1. Time doesn’t tick. It stings, whether or not we feel the push of it. Those were her last words to me. Goblet in hand, she sauntered off to never return. On any other cruise ship we might have become friends, shared laughs of one romantic disaster after another, rendering them silly, bearable. But just the hint of such retelling troubled her. It wasn’t until alone in a pin-striped, blue deck chair that I realized she didn’t want her wounds exposed to fresh sea air once unwrapped. She wanted very much for them to remain as they had been, just hers.

  2. Starfish King

Rory always had a sort of zest for life. There was a charm about him, even as a young boy. He used to put on these little plays he’d written, mostly about made up worlds under the water where he was a starfish king, and Mabel tamed the waves with seashell wings. To them, the lake was an ocean, a vast landscape of watery imagination. They spent summers exploring, swimming between the lake islands searching for magical creatures. They believed the lake would take them one day. Maybe it did. Maybe there is a touch of magic in those waters.
