A Billion Vivid Shades of Grey
My mother cried when I was born. When the doctor told her I had Achromatopsia, tears dropped from my mother’s blue eyes. As a baby I stared back, watching clear drops fall from her moon-colored orbs with fascination. Nobody knew when I saw the world, I was struck with such profound beauty. Other girls would fret, a pink or blue dress today? They’d remember my condition and suddenly change the topic. I shrugged it off, too lost in the spectrum of sparkling silver nuances. To see everything in black and white is to understand a billion vivid shades of grey.

A different spin
You always made my head spin. From the first time our eyes met and I felt weak to the first time we kissed and I went delirious, to our first lovemaking which left me on a cloud of dizziness, it has been a rollercoaster of intoxication. There have been times when things didn’t go as we wanted but, yet again, I was swimming in rage with bright lights and blurred vision. However, that shouldn’t be the reason my head whirls right now. It shouldn’t have led you to crack my skull with the spade, with which I’d dug this grave.
Trick of the Light
I’d said ‘yes’ because you dazzled me, with syrupy words, and copper hair flopping over one eye. I watched you dazzle others. Your light was blinding, but it was I who wore your ring.
In a cafe now, alone, I squint at an inflated sun. Light refracts through the window and I decipher shapes from outside. A woman with a pram; a child carrying an oversized cello. A tall copper-haired man kisses the baby in the pram, then the boy with the cello, then the woman. He kisses her for a long time, but perhaps it’s just the light.
